“I’m dreadfully sorry Lady Udaran, but Lady Ashasha has a request before I allow you in. She doesn’t believe you are really THE Udaran. She’s asked me to confirm it. She’s really quite adamant.”
“Confirm it? How do you… oh… OH. You know me THAT well do you?” Udaran smiled. After all, this WAS one of her admirers.
“Well, let’s just say that I’ve spent a LOT of time, um, looking at your pictures. I’m your biggest fan!”
Kitty couldn’t help but laugh at the embarrassed look on his face. To think, a guard at a brothel could even BE embarrassed!
“If I weren’t in such need of her help, I’d refuse. But so be it. Go ahead, you first.”
“WHAT?”
“Surely you don’t expect me to expose myself out here in front of the gods and nature by myself do you? You DID say she was insistent right?”
The guard hesitated and glanced back towards the door. He gave one last pleading look to Udaran, but she didn’t relent.
“Go on then, let’s see you!” she insisted.
Then with an embarrassed shrug, he removed his armor and stood naked before them. "Satisfied?“
Muz-Ra whispered to Kitty who couldn’t quite suppress a giggle, "I doubt he’s her BIGGEST fan!”
Udaran gave him an appraising look. "You’re a braver Khajiit than I gave you credit for K’rris. You deserve this.“
With that, in a moment she also stood naked before the guard. She struck one of her famous poses. "So? Do I pass?”
The Khajiit’s eyes weren’t the only thing that grew large at the sight of her.
“Your pictures don’t do you justice, Lady Udaran! You’re even more beautiful than I expected!”
“Ok, NOW he’s her biggest fan,” Muz-Ra said appreciatively.
Both Udaran and K’rris glanced down at his erection, which K’rris covered quickly. "I’m sorry Lady, I can’t help it.“
"No need to be embarrassed, K’rris. I’m flattered – by BOTH your compliments! Now let’s get dressed and go see Lady Ashasha, shall we?”
The moment they were both finished dressing, a voice came from within. "Welcome to the Cathouse, Udaran. You and your friends may enter. And Ubergard is welcome as well.“
Kitty and the others stepped out of the main Markarth gates after a leisurely breakfast provided by Kleppr free of charge. However, as Udaran pointed out, this might have been expected given the exorbitant amount she had paid for a single night’s stay on essentially a polished rock bed. Still, the breakfast was good and they didn’t want to arrive at their destination TOO early given the Cathouse’s late-night hours of operation.
The mood was quiet among them. Kitty noticed that even Muz-Ra’s attitude was subdued, having made only a single crude comment concerning the breakfast sausage. In no time they had arrived at the building. Udaran pointed to a sign over near the door which read, “Only weapon allowed is that between your legs. If you bring more, you will lose them both.” While humorous, Kitty was none too sure that it was entirely in jest. Skyrim was, after all, quite a lawless and violent land. Sill, it did help to lighten the apprehensiveness.
“What do you think Ubergard? Do you want to stay out here, or risk your blade to the local security?” asked Udaran.
“I’ll remain out here. Just yell if you need me. I doubt there’s anything to worry about here.”
“I agree. Well Kitty, Red, I guess this is it.”
“Good luck Udie,” Muz-Ra said, “But don’t be too disappointed if she’s not here.”
“Thanks,” replied Udaran, and then knocked on the door.
It took a few tries before a bleary-eyed male Khajiit came out to meet them, closing the door behind him.
“Yes? What is it? We won’t be open for hours yet,” he stated with some annoyance. Then, as if reappraising them, he added, “Or perhaps you’re applying for a position?”
“No sir, we need to speak with the owner, Lady Ashasha. We need to talk to her about a matter of some importance, and we’re prepared to pay handsomely for any information she can provide,” Udaran said, and then shook a pocket that clinked with the unmistakable sound of coins.
His eyes brightened at that. "Well, you DO know how to make an introduction lady! I’m K’rris, one of Lady Ashasha’s guards. Please forgive the rude introduction. We’re really a pretty friendly lot, just not morning people. Can I tell her who is asking for her?“
"Call me Lady Udaran. I doubt she would know me, we’ve never met. But I… WE have come a long way to speak with her. I assure you we mean no harm. Our guard here, Ubergard, will wait outside.”
“Udaran? THE Udaran? From the Tails?!” the Khajiit’s eyes grew large.
“Oh! You know my work? I didn’t expect anyone would know me this far from Whiterun. Then perhaps you know Red, Kitty and Ubergard too?”
“Sorry, I don’t go much for Scalies. And I don’t recognize Kitty I’m afraid,” he said, nodding in greeting. "I don’t get the Tails often, just occasionally a friend will loan me a copy. I’m awfully glad to meet you Lady Udaran!“
"That explains it. Kitty’s pretty new. She’s only been in a couple of issues.”
“Well, wait a moment, I’ll be right back!” With that, the guard retreated back inside the Cathouse.
“Who’d have guessed, Tails readers way out here?” Udaran remarked.
“But only the Khajiit issues,” snorted Muz-Ra in mock indignation, to which even Ubergard had to laugh.
The door opened again and K’rris emerged, once again closing the door behind him. That, Kitty realized, was not a good sign.
“So this is Markarth. Impressive,” Kitty said as they walked the steps up to the main gate of the city.
“They do love their stone!” Muz-Ra agreed.
“Have you been here before Uber?” Udaran asked.
The big Argonian shook her head, “No. Though I have heard stories. They say they sleep on stone beds here.”
“That’s just a myth I’m sure.”
“My pads are killing me. A stone slab sounds pretty good to me right now!” said Kitty, groaning slightly.
“Unfortunately we can’t rest just yet Kitty. We’ve got to get some civilian clothes first, right?” Muz-Ra reminded her.
Udaran agreed, “She’s right Kitty. It’s too bad we didn’t come across any merchants on the way, but I do think we should change as soon as possible.”
Then, stepping up to the guard, she purred in supplication, “Sir, I’m afraid we’re new to your great city. We are in need of a merchant. Can you advise us where we might find one?”
The guard removed his helmet and smiled at her, looking her up and down appreciatively. "You’ll want Arnleif’s. Just stay to your right as you enter, you can’t miss it.“
"And, there’s no restrictions for Khajiit and Argonians here?” she added hopefully.
“Naa, not for you. You’re welcome anywhere in the city – but do change out of your working clothes. Some people might object.”
“That’s just what we’re looking for. Thank you sir!” Udaran smiled her sweetest smile, trying not to reveal too much fang.
Kitty noticed the guard’s eyes widen somewhat as Ubergard passed him before he donned his helmet again.
“Hello Ma’am. Are you Arnleif? We have need of some more… standard shall we say… clothing,” Udaran said in her sulkiest Nord voice.
“No cat, and you can turn off the heat. I’m not into your kind. I am Lisbet, the owner of Arnleif. He was my husband.”
“Oh,” Udaran said, reverting to her normal accent, “I’m sorry to hear that.”
“Spare me. And this better not be on credit. Ash still hasn’t paid me from her last visit!”
“Ash? Oh no, we have coin.” Udaran said, revealing a small coin purse.
“Oh! I’m sorry. You’re not from the Cathouse?” Lisbet lightened up considerably at the sight of the purse.
“The Cathouse?” Udaran asked, suddenly more interested.
“Yes, I’m sorry – it’s your clothes. The only Khajiit around here that dress like that are from there. Please forgive me. Here, Imed will show you our clothing line. Though I’m afraid we’ll have nothing that will fit your tall friend here.”
“Kitty, would you mind checking out the clothes with Imed? I’d like to hear more about this Cathouse.”
Kitty chose what she considered to be conservative clothes and one with somewhat more elegant for Udaran as their leader, before returning to the counter where Udaran was speaking.
“I do thank you Lisbet. I will call on lady Ashasha at the Cathouse in the morning.”
“That may be a bit too soon I’m afraid. They don’t open till after dark.” Lisbet warned, adding “…or so I hear.”
Udaran smiled, “Oh, we’re not patrons OR prospective employees. We’re just looking for someone who may be there.”
“Uh huh.” Lisbet didn’t sound convinced, but brightened as the purse was opened.
“Will that do? And do you mind if we change in here?” Udaran asked, leaving an abundant supply of gold on the table top.
“Oh yes! Thank you! Do come back again if you find yourself in need of anything. And good luck with Ashasha tomorrow. As for the inn, The Silver-Blood Inn is just across the road back towards the entrance.”
A few minute later found the group standing in front of the main Markarth Inn.
“Well THAT was lucky! And it certainly sounds like the brothel we’re looking for,” Kitty said happily.
“Definitely. There CAN’T be more than one around here. Where is it Udie?” asked Muz-Ra.
“She gave me some directions. It’s not in Markarth proper, but it’s not far outside, just across the river. Now let’s go get a room and let me get out of this BLANKET!”
“Really! How Nords survive inside these clothes is beyond me. Can’t feel a WISP of air!” Muz-Ra observed.
“So, good sir,” Udaran said to the bartender/manager of the Silver-Blood Inn, “No rooms at all for a few weary travellers?”
“Kleppr, miss. Please call me Kleppr. No, I’m sorry, but all our rooms are taken this night. It’s those damned Forsaken. Everyone within miles comes into Markarth to avoid them at night. Unless you would consider sleeping out here for the night?”
“Oh, I don’t think that would be wise Mr. Kleppr,” Udaran purred, “You see, I can’t sleep in clothing at all and I fear the sight of my naked, exposed body would offend your guests.”
Kleppr raised an eyebrow at that. "Oh, well… hmm… Maybe there’s something I could do for you…“
Udaran plopped a fat bag of coins on the counter, "and for my friends too of course.”
“Of course. We’ve a nice room just up the stairs. Our cook and houseboy stay there, but they can sleep out here tonight. However, er… I’ll need to drop in from time to time during the evening to get the food.”
“Oh, that would be JUST fine Mr. Kleppr! I’m sure a man of your dignity wouldn’t disturb four sleeping females under your roof. I just hope my lack of nocturnal dress doesn’t disturb you too much.”
“Yeah, um… I mean no! Right this way.
After a somewhat disrespectful scene in which Kleppr evicted his employees from their room unceremoniously, the four were finally left alone.
"Oh my god, I didn’t know how sore my pads were until I took my weight off them!” Udaran sighed.
“Red? Are you sleeping Au Naturel too?” Kitty asked, rubbing her own feet.
“Well, you got me thinking Udie. I think I’ll leave my bikini off for tonight.”
“Oh? Don’t relish the thought of some mystic eyes watching you Red?”
“In fact, no. I don’t. Kitty? Aren’t you sleeping with me or Udie tonight?”
“Not tonight. Besides, the fire feels awfully good.”
“Well, you’re not missing much sleeping on the floor I have to say. Too bad it wasn’t a myth eh Udie?”
“I’ll say! But at least it’s warm in here. Goodnight everyone. With luck, we’ll be on our way back home tomorrow.”
Kitty noticed that during the night, Kleppr only sneaked inside a few times to take a peek. Lecher he may be, but he was a harmless lecher – which was well for him since Ubergard was not snoring.
“What do you suppose happened?” Muz-Ra asked quietly to Udaran as they turned onto the road to Markarth.
“No idea, Red. Something serious. But we should let her decide if she wants to talk about it.”
“Did she go out last night?”
“Not that I know of. But I don’t think it was just a bad dream either.”
Muz-Ra nodded, “Me neither.”
After hours of walking, Kitty’s mood had finally lightened enough to consider the future. “So, Udie, what’s your plan once we get to Markarth?”
“Well, we’re probably going to get there pretty late, so we’ll need to stay at an inn. If Markarth is like most large cities, it will have a combination tavern/inn somewhere near the entrance. I’m hoping the barkeep or maybe some locals will know about a whorehouse that offers Khajiits.”
Kitty considered this for a minute.
“You know, they won’t be used to us there, like they are in Whiterun. Maybe we should buy some ‘normal’ clothing. Otherwise they might think we’re looking for jobs there!”
“Good point. Ubergard, do you think there will be any traders along this road before we get there?”
“It’s always possible. It’s even possible that we might meet Ri’saad and Atahbah’s caravan.”
“Well, if so I think Kitty’s right. Let’s try and see if we can get some more conservative clothing before we get there.”
Ubergard turned with a raised eyeridge, “I hope you aren’t suggest I change?! This armor is worth more than half of Blue’s treasure. I’ll not leave it in some inn’s room to be stolen by a Markarth burglar.”
“Ok, ok! You can keep yours on. I doubt anyone would ever mistake YOU for a prostitute anyway.”
“I should hope not!”
“What about after,” Kitty continued. "I mean, what if we find this place? We don’t even know what her name is.“
Udaran shrugged. "I’ve no idea. I’m open to suggestions.”
Muz-Ra offered, “Well, we could ask the owner if anyone was sold to them from a Khajiit matching Hasskir’s description.”
“If the owner is still even the same. And we’re assuming she’s still there. That’s a lot of assumptions,” Kitty pointed out.
“I just thought, even if we find her, she’s going to have some hard news. Her mother was murdered and…” Udaran mused.
“And I killed her father,” Kitty concluded. "She’s probably not going to be overjoyed to hear that news.“
"No, I suppose not. But my duty is clear. I just have to find her and tell her what happened.”
“And give her the gold.”
“Yes, and give her the gold that her mother died for,” Udaran elaborated.
Kitty nodded and sighed once again.
“Kitty?” Muz-Ra ventured as the overcast sky began to darken into late afternoon some hours later.
“Yes Red?”
“What happened back there? At FarSeer’s place? It’s ok if you don’t want to talk about it, but sometimes it helps. We’re all friends here.”
Kitty walked on without replying.
“Ok,” Muz-Ra accepted Kitty’s reluctance.
A few minutes later Kitty relented, “I saw him… I went out in the morning to the outhouse, and on the way back, I saw him in werewolf form.”
“Did he see you?” Udaran asked quietly.
“Oh yes. He came up to me. But I… <sniff> Oh Udie, I couldn’t accept it. It was too terrible. All claws and teeth and the stink of blood. I knew he was FarSeer, he was my… friend. But I couldn’t see him. All I could see was a thing. A monster. To choose to BE that. I’ll never be able to understand it.”
At that, Ubergard turned to her.
“Nor I, Kitty. He always was a hunter though. We talked last night about it. He saw it as a way to become the ultimate hunter, without tools or weapons. It was always his dream to live that way, alone and needing no one’s help. He’s living his dream, and I do believe him when he says that he’s not a danger to anyone now. I too have seen his other form though. It seems to be designed to elicit fear and loathing. Hircine is a terrible Prince to worship, but perhaps not the worst of the lot. My brother was drawn to him years before he became what he is now. He loves the hunt, and always will. You were right to understand your limits. I fear he has lost all chance of any lasting relationship for that love, but you mustn’t think it a weakness within you. Your reaction is ingrained into any civilized being.”
“Thank you Ubergard. I think you’re right. I have to believe it really. When he came close to me, I was overwhelmed with fear. Like I had no control over my own body. That’s a feeling I hope never to have again. But I learned something about myself. I’m not as strong as I thought I was.”
“You tried, Kitty. FarSeer appreciated that, I’m sure. You tried, and that’s more than I can say for myself. I’ve fought werewolves before, and when I learned he had become one, I rejected him outright. I don’t understand the lure of the hunt, to go to that extreme for it. But I have learned something too. That even someone who would willingly accept – seek out – that disease may still be sane.”
Kitty rose early and slipped out back without waking the others, though Ubergard’s unblinking eyes followed her. In fact, Kitty was not convinced that the Argonian was awake, but she didn’t feel the need to find out. After her needs were met on her way back to the cabin, she noticed a dark shape far away down the hill but moving rapidly in her direction. She knew undoubtedly that it was FarSeer in his altered form, but as the distance was closed and she knew he was coming to meet her, she trembled involuntarily.
Finally, as it turned the last corner and approached her, she could see it’s form only too clearly. Though every nerve and instinct told her to flee, she decided she must trust in his words. Inside that thing, her friend was looking at her. For his sake she would trust him. But when he came within reach, her will gave out and she fell to her knees, looking away from him.
“I’m so sorry FarSeer… It’s too much. I trust you, but I can’t handle this. It’s my fault, not yours. I’m sorry.”
She felt a claw her brush shoulder as if in consolation, but at her involuntary shudder, it moved away. With a rustle, it was gone.
Kitty sat there for some time before gathering her courage and heading back into the cabin. If Ubergard was awake, she remained silent and Kitty lay back down. Her sobbing caused Udaran to wake.
“What is it Kitty?” she asked quietly. "What’s wrong?“
Kitty looked to her friend and snuggled closer. "It’s nothing,” she lied. "Bad dream.“
"I can’t say I’m surprised with all the talk of werewolves last night. But calm down, it was just a dream.”
“Dream? Did Kitty have a bad dream?” Muz-Ra asked as she rubbed her eyes.
“Yes, but it’ll be ok,” Udaran answered her.
With that they began to dress and gather their things for an early start.
“Oh, are you awake in there?” said a familiar voice from outside a little later. "I’ve got a breakfast ready for you if you’ve time before you have to go.“
"Breakfast? Of COURSE! Thank you again!” Muz-Ra replied happily as they all rose to leave the cabin.
“It’s a long walk, but if you stick to the course I’ve given Ubergard, you should get to Markarth tonight. I’ll walk you back to the road,” FarSeer answered after they had eaten.
“That’s great. You’ve been a big help to us FarSeer. Better than we could hope. We all really appreciate it,” Udaran thanked him as she gathered her belongings.
“And thanks for the dried venison too – it’ll come in handy on the road,” Muz-Ra agreed.
FarSeer looked to Kitty, who hadn’t said anything throughout breakfast and was obviously avoiding FarSeer’s gaze. While it was obvious something had changed in her, the others knew better than to bring it up.
A few minutes later, they had walked the path back to the road and were ready to continue towards Markarth.
“Well, thank you for staying with me. Will you be coming this way on your return?” FarSeer asked Udaran.
“From the explanation Ubergard’s given me, I understand that this would out of the way. The main path from Markarth to Whiterun goes north of the lake. Though your hospitality is appreciated, I think we’re all getting a bit tired of the road life. Probably not.”
“I understand. Well, until whenever we meet again, fare well. Oh! I forgot to mention it. You won’t have any problem with that wolf pack anymore.”
“You’ve killed them?” Udaran looked up at the Argonian.
“Not all, but the pack is greatly reduced. They wouldn’t attack anyone on the road again. At least until their pack increases again. I’m a pretty good manager of the resources around here, but I had let them get too numerous. They’d gotten bold. They are not anymore.”
“And it’s appreciated, for other travelers as well I’m sure. Good luck FarSeer. Perhaps we’ll meet again.”
“Perhaps. Goodbye, and be safe… Goodbye Kitty. I’ll remember you fondly,” FarSeer said and turned back to his cabin.
Kitty did not respond but gave him a sad look.
With that, the four turned toward the north following the western edge of the lake back up to the main road between Markarth and Whiterun. There they turned westward into the more mountainous land approaching the city of stone. Conversation was spare as both Ubergard and Kitty seemed to be lost in their thoughts, or just preferring to let their mind wander during the monotonous trudge of the journey.
“So… your brother the werewolf? I must say he is a fine specimen though!” Muz-Ra said jokingly to Ubergard, but she did not respond.
Though she wore the same tough expression she had adopted since she first saw FarSeer, Kitty wondered if perhaps she detected some other emotion in the giantess. Certainly the Argonian seemed to be lost in her own thoughts anyway.
“I don’t think she wants to talk about him Red,” Kitty suggested.
“They sure seem to grow large in Uber’s family though. Do you suppose the same holds true for his manhood?” Muz-Ra speculated.
“I don’t think ANYONE wants to talk about that Red!” Udaran said.
“Ok, come on up girls,” said FarSeer from within the now-lit cabin. "I told you it wasn’t much. I’m cooking some food out front. It should be ready in an hour or so. And before you say anything Ubergard, it’s venison.“
"Saving the good stuff for yourself?” Ubergard shot him a nasty look.
FarSeer sighed and turned to the others. "Can I get you anything to drink? I’ve some mead and some spiced wine.
“That was just excellent FarSeer. Maybe a bit light in the vegetable department, but you do know your way around a slab of meat!” Muz-Ra thanked the big Argonian, smacking her lips and began to chisel out some fragments from between her teeth with a small stick she’d found for the purpose.
Kitty could swear she heard from Udaran under her breath, “As do you.”
“Thank you Red. Now, as for other accommodations, I’m afraid I have little in the way of a lavatory here. There’s a bucket of water in the corner for washing, and for any other needs there’s a hole about a hundred feet directly behind the cabin. Just watch your step. I’ve erected a band of rocks around it for privacy so you can’t miss it.”
“From what I’ve seen of male urinals recently, I’ll bet YOU can,” Muz-Ra quipped with a chuckle.
“I’ve put down some mats for bedding but they’re not much I’m afraid.”
“Oh, I was going to mention, FarSeer. I hope you don’t mind, but I sleep in the nude. Not to be provacative mind you, and to be clear, I’m not interested in males anyway, but it’s just how I sleep. Is that going to be ok?” Udaran asked without a trace of embarrassment.
“Sure Udaran. I can’t say I wouldn’t enjoy the view, but don’t worry. In fact, I spend my nights nude too you might say!”
“Oh yes. Though you might find my appearance somewhat altered. I don’t sleep, but I do get cranky!” FarSeer explained with a smile.
“OH! So you spend your nights as a wolf?” Udaran asked.
“Werewolf. It’s not the same form at all. In fact, I often wonder how that connection was ever made. But again, don’t worry. My consciousness is fully intact. I don’t hurt anyone. Years ago the body change did affect my mind and I couldn’t say that – but time and experience work wonders. I’m as much myself in werewolf form as I am now. I just can’t talk, but I can think. Sleep, however… it’s not that I can’t sleep. It just does me no good, so I no longer even try,” FarSeer went on.
“So, what do you do all night?” Kitty asked, genuinely curious.
“Oh, mostly just run, hunt and kill. You’ll notice I have no weapons. Don’t need em. That venison you ate, I took that down just last night.”
“You’ve got yourself quite a place here, FarSeer. A nice life. But doesn’t it get lonely?"
FarSeer let out a sigh. "Yes, it does. To be honest, you’re the first people I’ve had here in months. But when you choose to follow my path, you have to anticipate solitude. Mostly I wouldn’t have it any other way. But, I’m a social creature too and once in a while it get’s a bit much. Which is why I really appreciate you girls visiting me.”
Ubergard seemed about to say something, but thought better of it. Instead, she confessed, “I will admit you’ve built a nice life here FarSeer. Though I disagree with your life choices, you’ve done well with it. Better than any of us in the family expected. When next I see them, I’ll let them know.”
Kitty noticed that FarSeer seemed to listen to his sister’s few words as if they were words from a god. Perhaps it was a trick of the light that made his eyes shine a little brighter. But he remained silent for some time before he asked Ubergard if she would mind walking with him for a bit. Kitty was not that suprised when the giantess agreed and the two walked out into the night, though Kitty certainly noticed that Ubergard didn’t forget to bring her huge axe along too.
While they were out, the three remaining travellers prepared their beds. Though the mat that Kitty lay upon was certainly firm, it was surely better than sleeping on rocks and roots. Udaran stripped out of her clothes and settled in as Muz-Ra returned from a trip behind the house.
“How was it?” Kitty asked, knowing that she would find out herself in the morning regardless.
“Oh, smelly as you’d expect. But he’s put up an acceptable seat. He even sanded and varnished it – no spliters in the butt there. I’d not want to try it in the rain though.”
At that, footsteps were heard entering through the door and Ubergard and FarSeer’s forms were seen in the doorway.
“Good night girls. I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Good night FarSeer,” Ubergard grudgingly responded. "Don’t kill anyone we know.“
"Thanks,” FarSeer said sarcastically. "Oh, and Udaran?“
"Yes?”
“Nice!” he smiled, and left the cabin.
Kitty heard a snort of disgust mixed with amusement from Udaran, “He wishes!”
Kitty then snuggled up, happily against Udaran, and fell into a contented and undisturbed sleep. Somewhere in her sleeping mind though, she did notice that there was no snoring from Ubergard all night long.
“We would love to!” Kitty spoke up, with an agreeing nod from Udaran.
“Sounds good to me!” Muz-Ra added.
“Only if you tell them first, FarSeer. They need to know who they are planning to stay with,” Ubergard demanded.
“Kitty,” the Argonian turned to the little Khajiit with a somewhat sad expression on his scaled face, “though An-Dee… I mean Ubergard… means to dissuade you from coming with me, I suppose I do need to tell you. I am a werewolf.”
A gasp came from Kitty involunarily. Though she’d heard of the affliction before, she’d never met an actual werewolf.
“A werewolf!? Are you kidding?” Udaran asked, shocked.
“No. It’s true. But I can control myself. I would harm no one. I’ve learned to handle it. I wouldn’t lie to you about that,” FarSeer said, looking at Kitty.
“Wolves and worse he said. He just didn’t mention that he WAS the ‘worse’,” Ubergard stated flatly.
Udaran looked at the male Argonian, who seemed to be looking for absolution from Kitty. "FarSeer, if you say we’ll be safe, I believe you.“
"Oh, you’ll be safe. I’ll make CERTAIN of that,” Ubergard said, towering over FarSeer.
“Well then let’s go,” Udaran said cheerfully. “Lead the way FarSeer!”
Muz-Ra leaned close to Udaran as they walked off the trail into the wild along a barely noticable path, and whispered, “Are you sure about this Udie?”
“No, but I’d much rather know where he is than spend the night outdoors NOT knowing. Besides, Ubergard may hate him, but I believe in HER too. We’ll be ok. I think.”
“I CAN control it Kitty,” FarSeer repeated.
Kitty walked alongside her friend, “I’m sorry FarSeer. I’m sure you can. Have you tried to do anything about it? There may be some way to remove it you know. I’ve heard of…”
Ubergard interrupted her, “He didn’t become a werewolf accidentally Kitty.”
“That’s true. I chose this life.”
Kitty turned to his accuser, “And just how do YOU know so much about him Ubergard?”
“Oh, I’m sorry. I thought I mentioned it. She’s my sister Kitty.”
Ubergard nodded, “Unfortunately, that is so.”
“What a night of revelations this is turning out to be!” Muz-Ra suggested.
“That’s my place just ahead. If you wouldn’t mind, could you stay here for a minute while I clean up and get some food cooking? I wasn’t expecting guests and, being unmated, I’m afraid the place is something of of mess. Just give me 10 minutes,” FarSeer requested and then was off.
“Probably off to hide the bodies,” Ubergard muttered.
As with the other times, Kitty’s blindness wore off so suddenly that she didn’t realize it until she looked at the huge muscled arm she was holding.
“OH! Hello again FarSeer. I can see you now. My but you’re big! Say, hold up a second and let me get my boots back on.”
“No problem. That’s great! And yes, living out here in the wilds will certainly build muscle. There’s always something that needs lifting, carrying or pulling it seems. So, if I understand right, that cloak of yours blinds you for the same amount of time you were invisible, right?”
“That’s about it.”
“I’m not sure if that’s a curse or a blessing.”
“Well, it has helped me out on occasion. For all your help though, I’d like to give it to you!”
“Thank you, but no. The more I stay away from magic, the happier I’ll be. Besides, it would never fit me.”
Kitty considered that. "I guess so. But surely there’s something I can do to repay you?“
"Maybe after we find your friends. If I gauge the timeline right, they shouldn’t be too far.”
“I was thinking of repayment BEFORE we find them,” Kitty said with a gleam in her eye.
“KITTY! Oh thank god you’re ok. Where have you been? We’ve been looking for hours! After it got dark, we feared the worst. Ubergard’s been beating herself up for letting you go alone,” said Udaran and then called out, "Ubergard! Come back! We found her!“
"I’m sorry Udaran. Hi Red! It’s a bit of a long story, but the gist of it is that I was chased by wolves and ended up stuck up in a tree a long way from the trail. My new friend FarSeer here helped me out and led me back to the trail while I was blind.”
“Well thank you, FarSeer! We’d be lost without our Scout!” Muz-Ra added, looking the big Argonian up and down approvingly.
“I don’t know about that Red, I think maybe you would do better WITHOUT me. I’m not proving to be a very good scout.”
At that point Ubergard came into the clearing and stopped cold at the sight of FarSeer.
“An-Dee?” FarSeer asked as if seeing a ghost.
“Heem-Ja. So this is where you’re hiding now,” responded Ubergard with obvious disdain.
“I’m called FarSeer now. And I’m not hiding,” FarSeer protested.
“Call it what you will. And I’m known as Ubergard here, so I’d appreciate it if you’d use that name. Actually, I’d appreciate it more if you never spoke to me at all.”
Kitty was outraged by this rude introduction. “Uber! Please! FarSeer probably saved my life. Please show him some respect!”
“I’m sorry Kitty. You don’t know him. I do. I give respect to those who deserve it.”
“I don’t care what you think Uber, he DOES des…” Kitty started angrily before FarSeer interrupted her.
“No Kitty. She’s right. You don’t know me. I’d best go. I’m glad you’ve found your friends, but I must be off now.”
With that, the Argonian turned to leave.
“Wait!” shouted Udaran unexpectedly, casting an angry glare up at Ubergard.
FarSeer stopped and turned back. "Yes?“
"You’ve returned Kitty to us and have asked for no payment or reward…”
The barest glance between Kitty and FarSeer went without notice from the others.
Udaran continued, “…and we could use your guidance as I’m sure you know this area far better than any of us. It’s late and we need to find a safe place for the night. Maybe you could guide us to somewhere appropriate?”
The Argonian considered this for a moment.
FarSeer replied quietly, “This area is teeming with wolves and worse. I daresay with Ubergard, you should have no problem if you stay close to the trail. However, if you wish, you’re welcome to the rough hospitality I can offer. I have a cabin not far from here. Maybe an hour’s walk. It’s small and sparse, but it would provide a roof over your heads and I have a pretty well-stocked larder. If you are interested, you may follow me. I would be honored to have you stay the night. Even An-Dee if she would condescend to do so.”
Kitty heard some rustling below her and perceived that the wolf had apparently left, and then a few more minutes before an obviously Argonian voice spoke from below.
“Hello lady Khajiit. What are you doing up there?”
“What? Oh! Hi, I’m kind of stuck up here. A wolf chased me up and I can’t get down.”
“Well, the wolf is gone now. You’ve left a nice cloak and boots down here too you know. Were I inclined, I might be tempted to steal them!”
“I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t. I’ve got friends nearby you know,” Kitty added.
“Friends eh? It seems they’re not close enough to help you down though. I could do that for you, if you’d like.”
Kitty thought about that for a second. She had no idea who this was below. She wasn’t even sure that he was alone. But she was pretty much helpless anyway. If he had any evil intent, he could easily shoot her down or probably come up and get her anyway.
“I’m afraid I’m at a disadvantage. I’m blind up here, and I don’t even know your name!”
“I’m called FarSeer. Nothing mystical, I just have good sight. Which is helpful in this case as I saw you being chased a while ago. But you sure didn’t seem to be blind then.”
“Well, it’s nice to meet you FarSeer. I hope. No, it’s a temporary condition. It will clear up in a while.”
“Interesting. As is those clothes you’re wearing. I’m awfully curious to know why a Khajiit, dressed like that, found herself chased up a tree by a wolf out in the wilds of Skyrim. I know I’m a stranger to you, but I’m fairly well known around this area. I live in a cabin not far from here. Just one of those random hunters that keep to themselves in the wilds I’m afraid. If you’d rather, I’ll leave you be. I understand your predicament and won’t hold it against you if you’d prefer me to go. But you know it’s getting late. Wolves and worse may be back after dark. I’d advise you to accept my hospitality, at least till your condition clears up.”
Kitty realized that what he said was true. Walking down a trail with Ubergard and the otheres around her was one thing, but now she was alone, blind and weaponless. She made up her mind, having really little choice.
“Ok, FarSeer. I’m going to try and come down. But I’m afraid I’m much better climbing UP than down. You might want to watch out for falling cats.”
“Oh, don’t worry about that. I’m pretty strong. I’ll catch you if you do.”
“Um… how high up am I? I can’t really tell.”
“High enough. Do take care. If you fell from there it would be… troublesome. I’ll tell you where the lower branches are for a foothold. That should help.”
“That’s it. You’re doing fine.”
The process was tedious, but she ALMOST made it before a branch gave way unexpectedly. She let out a shriek but the time she spent in the air was mercifully short before she slammed heavily onto something scaly but yielding. FarSeer let out an unexpectedly high-pitched howl of his own as the impact knocked him to the ground as well.
“Oh! I’m VERY sorry FarSeer!” Kitty apologized, sitting up rapidly.
“Nmph frovlm ldy. Bt pls mve. Yr sttng on m fce,” came the muffled reply.
Kitty took a second to work out the garbled words before she yelped and leapt clear.
“Oh my god! I’m SO sorry. Did I hurt you?”
Now clear of her weight, the Argonian sat up and replied, “My muzzle, no. My genitalia… I’ll just have to walk delicately for a while.”
Kitty felt the fur of her tail bristling, and hoped her new acquaintance didn’t notice her Khajiit-ish blush.
“Now how can a female dressed like that be embarrassed? Which reminds me, what is YOUR name lady?”
“Call me Kitty, FarSeer. I’m so sorry!”
Standing, the Argonian took her hand. "Happy to meet you Kitty. Now if you’ll walk with me, perhaps we can find these friends of yours? If you didn’t just say that to warn me off that is.“
"Oh no! They’re back around the trail somewhere, a bit farther east – or at least that’s where they were when I left them.”
“I THOUGHT you surely weren’t alone. Well, Kitty, I’ll take you back there and meet your friends.”
“Thank you FarSeer. You’re awfully kind to strangers you know.”
“Not all, but your predicament raised my protective nature. And your clothing, other parts. Before they were so rudely introduced!” laughed the Argonian.
Kitty laughed along with him as they walked back, and explained where she was from as she waited for her blindness to clear up – taking care not to reveal TOO much of their current mission. FarSeer might be helping her, but she still knew nothing about him really.
A few minutes passed before Udaran spoke up, “I don’t see or hear anything. Uber?”
“Nothing here either, but something’s out there.”
Kitty sighed and admitted, “Sounds like Scout work to me.”
“Be careful Kitty. Just go far enough to see what it is and come back,” said Udaran as Kitty once more donned her invisibility cloak.
“I’m really starting to hate this thing,” Kitty thought as she raised the hood.
With that, Kitty headed back to the trail, it’s hard packed earth and stone offering a quieter approach. Stealthily she crept farther down the trail, stopping to listen every few paces, then continuing on when nothing presented itself.
Soon she was out of sight of where the others waited, and before long out of earshot as well. She considered turning back but decided to continue on since she had as of yet seen nothing unusual.
Then she saw them. Three lean wolves emerging onto the trail in front of her from the grass. She immediately dropped into a crouch, and at the same time she realized two facts.
First, the slight breeze was at her back carrying her sent towards the pack. Second, they were crouched facing her direction and were slinking towards her. Then she heard a sound from behind her. She turned back but froze when she saw two more wolves directly behind her and looking her way. While she may be invisible, their sense of smell was obviously indicating her presence nearby. And they were blocking her retreat.
Panic began to assert itself in her rapid shallow breath and she saw many sets of ears twitch just before they all bolted directly at her. Had she stood still, perhaps they would have stopped short when they could see no prey, but every instinct was dead set against that course and she bolted off the trail in the direction of the lake.
“WOLVES!” she cried as loud as she could, trying to at least alert the others.
That, of course, gave the wolves a definite quarry and like dogs chasing an unseen fox, they were fully in the chase. Her feline instincts dropped her to all fours, trying to gain the few seconds she needed and, save for one particularly fast wolf, she left the others behind as she raced toward a large tree.
It took a few minutes before she managed to stop shaking and regain some sort of composure. Though she couldn’t see anything, she could hear the wolf below and she could do nothing but hold on and hope she was far enough up already. Her position was precarious, so she did the only thing she could think of.
“HELP! UBERGARD! MUZ-RA! I’M HERE! UDARAN! I’M STUCK UP IN A TREE! CAN YOU HEAR ME?” Kitty screamed at the top of her lungs.
However, no reply came and she realized she had gone too far from the trail.
